I woke up this morning with my entire bedroom lit up by a bright light coming from outside. I was a little baffled seeing how it was only 4am. I peeked through the blinds to see a Huge fire lighting up the night time sky. I immediately put on my glasses with fear that the fire was Mari's house.
Thankfully it wasn't, but it was the house directly across the street from hers. I put on a sweatshirt and ran to the back patio with my phone already calling Mari. She was fast asleep and didn't hear the fire sirens or notice the blaze across the street (her room is in the back of the house). She promptly hung up and jumped out of bed to see if the fire was any threat to her home. Being so close to the holidays it was hard not to get teary eyed as you saw the home of a fellow soldier being destroyed. Luckily the entire family; mother, 4 kids, a dog, and a cat all made it out of the house safely (father is currently deployed). I swear I stood on the back patio for 2 hours just watching this house. Trying to imagine what I would do if it was our home instead *shudders at the thought* It took until 9am to get the fire under control and soon after completely diminished. As soon as a few of us in the neighborhood posted on FB about the fire, volunteers were ready with donations for the family. Its amazing how our army family is so quick to step up and help each other out in a time of need! Thank God that nobody was hurt during this potential tragedy, however the family is mourning the loss of their home and many memories that were stored inside.
Watching all of this unfold and then learn that it was an electrical fire is terrifying to think about. It makes me very grateful to wake up every day with the many blessings in my life. Even the simple, but not so simple thought of having a roof over my head.
